The markets of Les Cayes and Cap-Haïtien mapped through geospatial analysis by AVSI, with support from USAID, commissioned ArkoConsulting to conduct a cartographic and geospatial study of the markets in Les Cayes and Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. This produced a set of thematic maps highlighting the commercial, social, and security dynamics of these urban spaces. Urban markets in Haiti are essential economic hubs for vulnerable populations, concentrating trade flows, livelihoods, and social dynamics across entire neighborhoods. As part of its food security interventions funded by USAID, AVSI required a detailed geospatial understanding of two major markets — Les Cayes in the South and Cap-Haïtien in the North — to guide its support for local economic actors. ArkoConsulting carried out a cartographic study integrating field surveys and geospatial analyses. The mission produced over ten thematic maps covering the location of stalls and commercial activities, the distribution of products by category, the sociodemographic profile of traders, supply flows, users' perceptions of security, and data on the surrounding habitat. All collected data was integrated into a geographic information system enabling cross-analyses between economic, social, and security dimensions. The maps and analyses provided AVSI with a spatial diagnostic tool for targeting its support interventions in Haiti’s urban markets.
